Artemether is used in combination with the Lumefantrine for effectively treats the resistant developed strains of falciparum malaria. Both the drugs are active against the uncomplicated species of malaria, Plasmodium falciparum and chloroquine-resistant strains.
Artemether acts more rapidly i.e. it has rapid onset of action and clears rapidly out of the body thus it provides rapid relief from the malarial parasites by decreasing their number.
Combination of artemether and lumefantrine is used because it is better tolerated and have fewer adverse effects or produces less vomiting, no central toxicity.
Artemether belongs to the class of artemisinin derivative. It interferes with the red blood cells of the body.
Lumefantrine is the synthetic amino alcohol or derivative of fluorene and is belongs to schizonticide class. Lumefantrine is given only once a day.
